"Hyper Nomads"
Jazzsteppa present their debut LP "Hypernomads
Jazzsteppa are an internationally acclaimed Electronic music duo who combine cutting-edge digital production with acoustic instruments, fusing hard-line rave sounds with Dixieland, Jazz and Blues, to create a unique brand of dance music. They are globally acknowledged as innovators and pioneers of the live Dubstep sound and have featured in Time Out: London; Tel Aviv; Bucharest; Chicago; Moscow and Sofia and hailed as "a breath of fresh air in the clubs" by German broadsheet Berliner Zeitung. They receive regular airplay on national radio across Europe, including BBC Radio 1 and XFM in the UK.
Their pioneering way of working – they are widely credited as the first Dubstep artists to perform live and record with acoustic instruments – has set them apart from other producers, allowing them to create a sound that is wholly unique yet utterly contemporary at the same time.
Since forming in 2007, Jazzsteppa have released a total of seven singles: "Jakin/Two" on Hotflush; "Five/America B" on MG77; "Big Swing Sound" and "Sweet Tooth" on Studio Rockers; and "Jazzsteppa", "Shamen" and "Fuck Jazzsteppa Vol. 1" on their own label.
Jazzsteppa have performed sell-out shows across the United States and at renowned venues in cities across Europe including St Petersburg, Tel Aviv, Bergen, Paris, Kiev, Bratislava, Amsterdam, Moscow, Athens, Prague, Zagreb, Dresden and Ljubljana among them, and have played festivals including Glastonbury, The Big Chill, Glade, Secret Garden Party, Womad, Fusion Festival and the Meltdown Festival curated by Massive Attack in 2008 at London's Southbank Centre.
The Jazzsteppa label, founded in 2007, has pushed up and coming artists such as Borgore (Tel Aviv) and Tomb Crew (UK) into the limelight, and regularly collaborates with other major players in the dance music world, with a co-release with revered UK imprint Ninja Tune imminent.
However it is their own material that is set to take centre stage now with Studio Rockers ready to present their debut LP "Hypernomads". The album features three of the standout tracks from their previous singles on the label along with 12 brand new electrifying tracks interspersed with several cheeky skits. This electrifying LP advances the duo's unique and masterful ability to both fuse and transcend genre boundaries, adroitly blending the perennial vibes of dub, blues, swing, acoustic big-band and Dixie-land flavours with the rhythmic contagion of contemporary Dubstep and electronic music.
The epic opening track, "Baby Jesus" sets the tone for a voyage of chromatic super-phonic indulgence that pervades the LP in its entirety, dextrously merging low-frequency waveforms with elevated brassy textures, offset against an intricate and multifaceted percussive backdrop. Next up is the hugely infectious "Raising The Bar" which features the inimitable vocals of Foreign Beggars and will be the lead single from the album and features remixes from Stray, Wascal and Nuphlo. It further ascertains Jazzsteppa's exceptional capabilities for generic defiance and is no doubt set to be a massive hit. The fervently powerful "Baby Don't Leave Me" with its exhilarating bassline, cannot fail to be a muscular dancefloor success, and is alluringly followed by the more deliberately-implemented ponderousness and reverberating pulse of "Holding Ground". The subsequent "Rusty Trombone", opening with the memorably cyclical walking bassline and layered acoustic components rapidly escalates into a rushing specimen of sheer auditory genius, and the soulfully soaring female vocals of "Sweet Tooth", are accentuated by the contrasting tension of its edgily rousing instrumentation. A distinctive and exotically acoustic image saturates the listener’s brain in the oriental themed "Do U Love Me", revealing yet again the sparkling results achievable through the ingenious intermixture of both harmonic and stylistic categorisations. The evocative jazzy opening of "Investment Decision" is magically contrasted with its sensual vocals and unremittingly robust rhythmic emphasis, and the soothing yet energising capacity of "Stronger", coupled with its poetic spoken vocals delivered by none other than Benjamin Zephaniah, thrusts the listener into a mysterious realm of sonorous release. A kaleidoscopic keyboard riff and zesty sax motif infuse "Naked Lunch" with an innovative dynamism seldom seen in present-day dance music. Taking its name from the worldwide brainwave synchronizer phenomenon, "i-Doser" suffuses Jazzsteppa's signature live drums and brass sound with funky and two-step influences, creating an irrepressibly percussive groove with a carnival-esque feel, tempered by Jessie Lee Burns rich bluesy vocals. Then the listener is rapidly propelled into a domain of halcyon tranquillity with the reggae-styled vocals and resounding minor triads of "D U B". The heavy sonic safari of "Lion" prompts a luxuriant sojourn in an expanse of auricular Epicureanism, as its cavernous sub frequencies are juxtaposed with glitched-out electronic timbres. The memorable opening trombone caress and warped, capricious vocals of "Taylor Rain" make for a strikingly pulsating tune, and the bonus track "Wipeout" draws the LP to clairaudient conclusion synchronically reworking the 1963 Surfaris' classic with the resonant zeitgeist that we have by now come to expect from the mesmeric pair.
Hypernomads, in short, evinces a significant accomplishment of musical amalgamation, as not only the genus but also the global perspective of melodic and harmonious intersection make for a successive collection of euphonious triumphs, produce an infectious and addictive album that...
